After Action report of the Maui Wildfires

“As part of researching for some of our programs, I revisited the ‘After Action Report of the Maui Wildfires’ which was released last year.  These wildfires occurred in August 2023 and resulted in the deaths of 101 people as well as extensive property loss and environmental damage.  The Challenges, Observations and recommendations commence on p. 18 and are organised across the Preparation, Mitigation, Response and Recovery (PPRR) framework.

An additional and extensive report was also prepared on this catastrophic incident by Lahaina Fire Incident Analysis Report.    The Summary (3 pages in Section 5) commences on p. 300 of the report and provides a very through and succinct analysis of the findings and recommendations for all stakeholders following this incident.  The findings discuss responsibilities for preparedness, resource management, evacuation planning and reviews and the validity of contemporary community risk assessment processes as all relevant in preventing similar incidents.  All factors that are worth considering for many agencies in the sector.
