Michael Potter

Michael Potter has had various Management and Leadership positions within Commonwealth Government Organisations for over 35 years.  He holds tertiary qualifications in teaching and educational administration. He has extensive experience in emergency and incident management.
Michael was a Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) volunteer in the KNOX Unit for many years undertaking road rescue, storm damage, flooding operations, land search and general rescue tasks.

In 2003 Michael joined VICSES as the State Training Officer, delivering training to staff and volunteers as well as designing and developing packages for nationally accredited training.

Transferring to VICSES Central Region, Melbourne in 2005 as Regional Officer, Michael delivered all aspects of operational training to volunteers.  He also undertook numerous deployments for storm and flood events both within Victoria and New South Wales.

To broaden his knowledge and experience he transferred into an Emergency Management role that saw him providing support to local government for their Municipal Emergency Management Plans, delivering Emergency Management training to multi-agencies as well as developing and co-ordinating exercises for local government agencies.

Michael’s most recent role has been Manager Regional Operations Readiness.  In this role he managed competency-based training including the annual training budget for volunteers within Central Region, Melbourne to ensure volunteer operational readiness and capability.
Michael is also an Australasian Inter Service Incident Management System (AIIMS) facilitator.

Michael is an endorsed Level 2 Incident Controller and Level 2 Planning Officer.  He has been deployed to numerous parts of Victoria for flood, storm, landslide, and fires, undertaking these roles within multi-agency Incident Control Centres.

He has also worked in the role of VICSES Regional Agency Commander in Regional Control Centres during numerous multi-agency events throughout Victoria.
